24-Hour Gallery
Light Bringer Project’s 24-Hour Gallery
at 80 N. Raymond in Old Pasadena presents:
2009-2010 Exhibits
Curated by Kristina Faragher
I would like to thank Light Bringer Project for inviting me to curate for the 24-Hour Gallery in 2009. The exhibits will include work by emerging, mid-career and outsider artists. This artist-run space is a wonderful opportunity to exhibit without the pressure of the commercial venue haunting their every move. In this public arena, the space allows art to be experienced by people who deliberately come to view the work or as a serendipitous surprise for passers by who may have never stepped into a gallery, art institution or museum before.
In the role of curator, my desire is to exhibit art that is searching, moving, curious and burrowing through the meat of life and all experience; work created by artists who are digging for that ineffable expression, an unshackled search for their truth.
I realize the difficulties facing the artist in this desert of seeming decay and destruction that we call the twenty first century. I say to artists, feed on this dry jerky, transform this festering rot that is mediocrity, compost and recycle it through your soul into a nourishing feast. Of late, it is all the more urgent that artists keep their focus centered on cultivating their vision, allowing for gestation and a meaningful birth, so to speak. Take heart, there are some viewers that are aching, no, starving for one nutritious bite to savor in this land of visual surfeit; as artists, let us use our ability to respond, envision and give the kiss of life! Resuscitate!
I have selected several artists to showcase at the Light Bringer Project’s 24-Hour Gallery based on the above statements. Their creative process is an inquiry that is considered, has substance, critique and vision. They employ a visual language that is rooted in the locus of their interior experience and a heightened observation of life. These artists are willing to shirk passing opinions, shallow fancies, fashion, and academic theories to establish their own voice. This group is not necessarily related in style, use of media, or concept; what ties the work together is an authentic aesthetic excavated from the depths of their individual lives, imaginations and experiences.
